Be More Creative - 7 Keys To Creativity That'll Help You Be More Creative Than You Thought Possible (By Dan Goodwin )

Each of us are unique in the way we create, no two people are the same. However, there are certain common elements that are present in the lives of those who are consistently creative, elements that any of us can learn and adapt to work for us in our own creative lives.

Here then are the 7 Keys To Creativity that will help you be more creative, more often and more enjoyably:

Creativity Key No1: Create a little each day. In a 30 day period, surely whether you spend 15 minutes a day creating or create for 2 and half hours three times, it adds up to the same amount of creativity, right?

Wrong! When you create everyday, even just for 15 minutes, the habit that you build helps you be far more creative in ways you'll never reach by any other method. Commit to creating every day, it's the most valuable choice you can make for your creativity, bar none.

Creativity Key No2: Capture your ideas. A common complaint of creative people is that though they'd love to create more, they simply don't have enough ideas. Without an idea there's nothing to create from, no raw clay to mould into a beautiful vase.

What we really mean is not that we don't HAVE enough ideas, but we don't CAPTURE enough ideas. By carrying a sketchbook, voice recorder or camera with you at all times you can record your ideas as soon as they come. The more ideas you capture, the more ideas begin to flow to you. Use this technique and you'll never be short of a good idea again.

Creativity Key No3: The support of others. Creating - especially when you creativity is going through a low phase - can seem like the loneliest task in the world.

It needn't be. There's never been an easier time for artists from all over the world to connect and unite in supporting each other and collaborating on creative projects. Explore some online creative groups and communities today. You don't have to be a digital artist to appreciate the irreplaceable sharing and support a creative community can give.

Creativity Key No4: Acknowledge your progress. All of us evolve as artists but it's sometimes difficult to appreciate that, simply because we're with ourselves for every moment of every creative project. So get some objectivity to see how much you've actually developed.

A great way of doing this is to spend an hour or two each month just looking back over what you've created that month. You can also look back to what you were creating this time a year ago or 2 years ago. You'll be amazed at how you've moved on. Acknowledge that you're a constantly growing artist, and give yourself the credit you deserve.

Creativity Key No5: Enjoy your creativity. A major pitfall of creating is starting to get stuck in a creative project, ploughing ahead getting nowhere fast and steadily getting more and more frustrated. Eventually, the project you began with such excitement and high hopes has turned into a burden you can't stand to spend another painful moment on.

The problem is you lost touch with enjoying your creativity. When you start to feel you're getting stuck in a project, switch to something different. Pick a simple project that you know you'll enjoy and just have fun creating again, detach yourself from any expectation or "end product". The more you enjoy creating, the more easily your creativity flows.

Creativity Key No6: Accept that you're multi-creative. Many of us begin one form of creating, enjoy it and have some success with it, then feel we're locked into this creative medium for the rest of our lives. We label ourselves as "writer", "painter", "graphic designer" which does nothing but limit our vision and expectation of what we can create.

What's a creative medium you've always been curious about but never tried because you've thought, for example, "I can't paint, I'm just a writer"? Pick a few different mediums and just have fun experimenting. The knowledge, techniques and ideas you gain can be invaluable. And many of us find we're just as creative in a number of creative forms as in the one we thought was the only way we could create.

Creativity Key No7: Believe in your creative abilities. If deep down you don't actually consider yourself creative at all, and that you "just got lucky" with a couple of projects, then this belief will put a straightjacket on all you create.

Spend some time writing down your beliefs around creativity. What do you believe are the main attributes of someone who's highly creative? What are your HONEST beliefs about yourself as a creative artist? If they're less than positive, it's time to work on building that creative belief and confidence up.
