During the late 1980's, many of us remember when the Berlin wall came tumbling down. It was a great time for all of us, as it marked the end of the dangerous Cold War!
For the first time, westerners were allowed into Eastern Europe, and they brought back horror stories and photos of the terrible living conditions, that existed there for many years! The dilapidated housing, factories and buildings looked as if time had stood still, etc.
Because those countries were under Communist rule, the people did not have the freedom of expression, to exchange ideas with one another. Here, in the United States, American's are blessed with freedom of speech, and have the opportunity to exchange ideas with one another. This has made the United States of America the greatest and most powerful country in the world!
I've always been fascinated with the creativity and ingenuity of the American people in so many different fields. For example: How are stuffed animals made? How do the pills we all take, know where to go? What if there's a fork in the artery? How do diskettes hold information? Where do musical notes come from? How does a microwave oven work? How does the little arrow on a computer change to an hour-glass?
* Rose Bowl Parade: This is one of the most creative events in the world! And, it is all done in a 48 hour period, and year after year, the astonishing creativity shines under the sun.
* Panama Canal: This is one of America's engineering wonders, and the lakes and locks proved to be the right idea at the time. After 10 years; 70,000 people worked on the project; 400 million dollars spent on the project; and 5,600 deaths, mostly from malaria and yellow fever, the Panama Canal officially opened in August, 1914. Amazing feat!
* Disneyland: In my view, the Disney studios wrote the book on creativity, and year after year, we're all WOWed with their creative projects!
* Mt. Rushmore: This is one of America's treasures! It's mind-boggling to think that humans actually carved these faces of the four presidents on the side of a mountain back in 1927! The facial figures stand 60 feet tall, and it took 14 years to carve! (Sculptor: Guztzon Borglum) It just goes to show that even the impossible is possible!
* The elimination of polio: Great people do great things, and Dr. Jonas Salk, developed the vaccine to eliminate polio from the face of the Earth! "The Salk Institute truly reflects the broad humanistic of its namesake. Salk died at the age of 80 on June 23, 1995. A memorial at the Institute, with a statement from Salk captures his vision: 'Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.'"
* International Hot-Air Balloon Fiesta: Billed as the most photographed event in the world, it happens right here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I live. There's not much creativity in an ordinary hot-air balloon. But, it's with the Special Shapes hot-air balloons where the creativity comes in. Special shapes include: Mr. Scarecrow; Miss Daisey; the Energizer Bunny; the Purple People Eater; the Piggy Bank; newspaper; the old shoe; Garfield; Boo-Boo Bear; bottle of wine; the Ark; pumpkin; and many others. And my favorites are the dairy cow; Nelly the pink elephant and the turtle wearing sneakers! What a joy it is to watch these artistic giants fly high over-head!
* Time is Money! After one of my job lay-offs, I worked as a temporary employee at a plastic parts manufacturing company. This is one of the most clever ideas I;ve ever seen. One of the machines produced two different parts at the same time. The larger part measured about 4" by 2" and the smaller wafer-like part measured about 2" by 1/4" A single cardboard box was set on the floor to collect the parts. Because of this, it took time to separate the two different parts after the box was filled.
Somebody on the night shift, came up with an idea to separate the parts, while they were still on the conveyor belt. A piece of ordinary cardboard was used, and was cut to about 15" long by 4" wide. The piece of cardboard was taped to the conveyor belt at a 45 degree angle. A slot, measuring about 1/2" by 4" was cut out of the bottom of the cardboard. When the parts came down the conveyor, the skinny or wafer-thin part just went through the cut-out in the cardboard, and continued on its way. But, the larger part didn't fit through the cut-out, and had to travel diagonally along and around the cardboard..effectively separating the two parts! Each part then dropped into its own box. When the company produced about 300,000 of these parts, you can see the time saved, by this idea...and it didn't cost a dime!
Why didn't I think of that? How many times have you asked yourself that question? I believe everyone is creative in their own way. In the spirit of cooperation, WE THE PEOPLE can set off all those firecrackers in our heads...in the form of ideas...that will hopefully be revolutionary! Hooray for the Red, White and Blue!
